This not for the faint of heart, and if you are coming into this cold it is probably best to take your bike into a shop that does conversions to handle this process for you.

With that said, converting a regular bike into an electric bike can be a fun and rewarding project. Here are the basic steps to start thinking about if you are considering this type of conversion:

  • Choose an electric bike conversion kit: There are many conversion kits available on the market, ranging from basic kits with a motor and battery to more advanced kits with features like pedal-assist and throttle control. Choose a kit that fits your budget and the level of assistance you want.
  • Gather your tools: You'll need a basic set of tools including a wrench, pliers, and screwdrivers.
  • Remove the front wheel: Depending on the kit you choose, you may need to remove the front wheel to install the motor.
  • Install the motor: Follow the manufacturer's instructions to install the motor onto the bike frame or fork. This may involve attaching the motor to the wheel or crankset.
  • Install the battery: Attach the battery to the bike frame or carrier using the mounting hardware provided with your kit. Connect the battery to the motor according to the manufacturer's instructions.
  • Install the controller: The controller is the device that manages the motor and battery. Install it on the bike frame according to the manufacturer's instructions.
  • Connect the wires: Connect the wires from the motor, battery, and controller, following the manufacturer's instructions.
  • Test the system: Once everything is installed, test the system to make sure it's working properly. Turn on the battery, and try the throttle or pedal assist to make sure the motor is working.
  • Reattach the front wheel and adjust the brakes: Finally, reattach the front wheel and adjust the brakes so that they work properly with the added weight and speed of the motor.

Note: If you are not confident in your ability to complete this project, it is recommended that you have a professional mechanic assist you.
