Toronto has started to take major steps towards becoming a cycling city. The city has some of the best bike stores in Canada, a plethora of rental options, developing infrastructure, and some stunning trails. Electric biking is taking it's place in this burgeoning cycling culture and is set to thrive in the coming years.

The Toronto bike share has electric bikes available in the system. They can be difficult to find on busy days but there are more being added every month.

Ride Zygg

Ride Zygg is an electric bike subscription service for delivery carriers that offer three different types of e-bikes for as low as $179/month.

Buzzify

Buzzify is another e-bike rental service with rates starting at $165 a month.

Zoomo

Zoomo is a rental company targeted at delivery and cargo carriers. They offer both flex (starting at $59/week) and boost (starting at $189/month) for riders looking to quickly find an e-bike to deliver with.

Toronto's Best Electric Bike Trails

Toronto has a quickly growing cycling infrastructure with new separated bike lanes being added to major roads every year. It has an extensive network of trails and a ravine system interspersed across the city.  

Martin Goodman Trail

The Martin Goodman Trail is a popular waterfront trail that stretches for over 56 kilometers and offers great views of Lake Ontario. The trail is mostly flat and paved, making it ideal for cyclists of all skill levels.

Tommy Thompson Park

Tommy Thompson Park is located on a man-made peninsula, this park offers a scenic and peaceful environment for cycling. The park features a paved trail that is perfect for a leisurely ride.

Don Valley Trail

This is a multi-use trail that runs along the Don River and is a great option for those looking for a more challenging ride. The trail is approximately 32 kilometers long and features some steep inclines and rugged terrain.

Beltline Trail

Toronto Islands

The Toronto Islands offer a great cycling experience with beautiful views of Lake Ontario and the Toronto skyline. Visitors can rent e-bikes on the island or bring their own on the ferry.

Toronto's E-Bike Rules and Regulations

E-Bikes in Ontario can have a max assisted speed of 32km/h, a max weight of 120 kg, and an electric motor below 500 watts.

To ride an electric bike you must be 16 or older, wear a helmet, and adhere to the same rules of the road as cyclists. You do no need a license or permit for an e-bike.

Pedal Assisted e-bikes are treated the same as regular bicycles by Toronto bylaws. They can ride on bike paths, mixed trails, and anywhere else where cyclists are used to going.

Power-assisted electric bikes (e-bikes that use a throttle) are allowed on roads and bike lanes, but they are not currently not allowed on any of the city’s cycle paths or mixed-use trails.
